Giant Robo is my second Revoltech figure I've bought, after Gamera. Where Gamera impressed me with how much articulation they were able to give him, even with the stout sculpt and design he has, Giant Robo seems like it could've been a little better. Don't get me wrong- the figure looks great, and as a fan of Giant Robo, I can easily say that this is probably the best figure you can get of the iconic character. But where Gamera was a sturdy figure, Giant Robo is pretty freakin' fragile. I'm still on the fence about keeping this guy, which is unfortunate because he's such an icon, but hey, I'm honest when I review things, and don't just gush over the good while overlooking the bad.
First, the good- the sculpt is incredible. This looks just like Giant Robo, right down to the belt around his waist. The tube-like joints at the knees, elbows, shoulders and upper legs conceal the revolver joints brilliantly, and it makes it so that this figure looks like they just shrank down the Giant Robo costume, and let you pose it on the shelf. As usual, they snap in place each time you adjust them, and the arms hold poses well. The paint on my figure was nearly perfect, with only a tiny bit of slop on one of the hands. Aside from their infamous articulation, Revoltech figures are known for having superb paint, and it's funny how some companies that put out high end 1/6 scale figures, for up to three times the cost, still have trouble. Every tiny detail on Giant Robo is painted accurately to the on-screen counterpart, right down to the tiny details like bolts and his signature rocket pack. It even has a weathered look to it, like he's been through a lot of battles. Fans will not be disappointed with how it looks.
The articulation Giant Robo has is pretty good. You can move the following areas: head, shoulders, elbows, wrists/hands, waist, upper legs, knees and feet. All the parts that move on the arms are great, though the elbows do look a bit weird when bent, as you can see in the stock picture above (notice the 'gap' where the revolver joint is). It's no big deal, but just a bit of an eyesore on my part since I have an eye for minor things like that. Giant Robo comes with a grand total of ten(!) hands: closed fist, grappling, missile fingers, straight fingers and relaxed. All of these make for a bunch of cool poses, and it'll be hard to get bored posing him...until it comes to the con, which I'll get to in a minute. His other accessories include the standard name plate, a black circle stand, orange box to hold the extra hands and a 10 point Revoltech chip, which can only be redeemed in Japan.
So what's the big problem? There's a few things, but the main one is the legs. It's a real pain to get these things moving around, and I've still yet to re-create the poses in the stock pictures where he's doing wide stances. There just isn't much mobility here. The other problem is something the arms share, and it's that the limbs come off way too easily. Right out of the box, I thought my Robo had one leg longer than the other, but I soon found out it's just that the limps pop off without much effort. This can be frustrating when posing him, as you'll be re-adjusting leg length over and over. Each portion of the leg can be rotated too, including the dark parts over the knees and upper legs. What's worse- the parts that cover the shoulder and hip joints come off, and can't be put back into place. My Robo's left shoulder covering is now loose and I'm always trying to get that thing to stay in place. I've seen a lot of videos where people have the same problem, but don't mention it for some reason.
I feel bad giving him just 3 out of 5 stars. While he looks perfect, and has a great number of extra hands, Giant Robo is just too fragile, and I'm overall just not that happy with the figure. If it were a bit cheaper, I'd probably give him 3.5 instead. Fans of Giant Robo should still pick him up, if only to have what's probably going to be the only well-articulated figure of him. But getting some really cool poses is tricky, if you can even do it that is. Sorry Giant Robo, but you deserved better.
