(More customer reviews)That's what should go through any Transformer fans mind if they remember the 80's version of the cartoon. When you see the name Aerialbots, you think of the plane oriented autobots, about their rivalry with the Stunticons and eventually the climax of it, which would result with a battle between the combined Aerialbots vs. the combined Stunticons... or 'Superion vs. Menasor'. But more than that, you had the individual figures... Air Raid, Silverbolt, Fireflight, Air Raid and Skydive. They were robots that transformed into fighter jets and a Concorde.
With that much history, I also remembered that there was an Aerialbots set that came out only a few years ago as well that featured Superion. Upon closer inspection, it's clear that really what's being marketed is just the 'combiner' experience. The style is similar to the way Devastator was repackaged over the summer, where you had a bunch of 'drones' that made a big robot. It's a different approach, but one that's IMO just not as interesting since you don't have the different 'personalities' of the robots.
So in the end, the toy is ok in that you do have a 5 pack of Aerialbots, but you're really only getting two robots - one, the main transformer and then two, the main transformer on steriods. The drones do change, but only so that they can be combined with the main Transformer. Hence, this definitely isn't Superion - and to their credit they didn't say that that he was. But expecting it to be a new Aerialbot force, etc. might be disappointing to some. For the record, there's also a Combaticons combiner, so it was definitely a copy of the moldings & maybe the Bruticus and Superion releases of 2008 or 2009, but a 'dumbed' down version.
