(More customer reviews)Mantis is the second most powerful being, behind Darkseid on the fourth world planet known as Apokolips. He does a lot with energy and has the ability to generate anti-matter. There are two versions of this DC Universe Classics figure - this is the variant with "battle armor". Sorry, I can't tell you when or why he wore this armor but I love that this is a case where the variant isn't just a repaint but a different figure altogether.
For kids:
This is an interesting looking guy in his suit and all and also really colorful. I think as a bad guy or a crazy robot a kid might like however there may not be much character familiarity.
For adults:
Since he's in the battle armor the body sculpt is quite distinct from the usual DCUC body. He has an insectile helmet, blocky chest with some switches and crazy high shoulders and "winged" back pack. His arms end in pinchers and his forearms are armed with spikes. There are many rivets and spikes on the rest of his body and legs with his feet also ending in pinchers. All in all it's a really cool set up and all well done.
The paint work is a little lower on the scale but not for lack of trying. It's just that the main body was caste in dark green but there was a lot of yellow, orange and light green to paint on. Unfortunately this lent itself to a bit of slop in the details and there is a bit of bleed and sloppy details especially in the green to yellow transition areas. On the plus side he's very colorful and they took the extra care paint every little yellow rivet on the suit which looks really good.
He actually has most of the same articulation as a more standard figure without the suit getting in the way as much as you might expect. Cut neck, ball and pin shoulders, pin elbows and cut wrists. He has an ab crunch that works just fine despite that it looks like it would be limited and the cut waist works fine too but you do have to watch out for the two spikes on his pelvis that stick up. He does have the same forward, back and out hip joints as others but they are a bit limited by the "briefs" portion of the armor. His cut thighs are well hidden by the armor though and he has the usual pin knees and ankles.
He comes with his piece of Chemo.
I'm not too familiar with the guy but he is pretty unique and cool looking. I'd even say 4 stars if not for the paint issues that really are an eyesore. I'd say 3 ½ and feel it's fair to round down. That said if you find one with perfect or much cleaner paint application than mine he could easily be a 4 star guy. To be fair they did have to apply A LOT of paint to this guy - probably more than a more standard figure.
The collect and connect (CC) is Chemo - a walking toxic waste barrel. He's made of clear green plastic with bubbles sculpted in - and lots of additional bubbles in the variant version. He's simplistic in nature but the sculpted areas look really good. He's also pretty big and several inches over the standard figures. His is a limited set of articulation but he's really fun to look at, especially with a light behind him. 3 ½ to 4 on Chemo.
