The instructions say "8+ years old". I bought it for a bright 6-year old. After looking through the kit & instructions, I wave off my ten-year old. I turned it over to myself, a 44-year old with a Ph.D. in computer science, who's fairly mechanical. There was a couple hours between then & bedtime, and I hoped to have a working robot for the kids by then.
Hours after sending them to bed, I still don't have a working robot. Looking at it, it doesn't appear possible it will work. The spring that holds the crown gear against the pinion gear looks like entirely the wrong part; the screws that secure the axle assembly catch when the axle rotates, because the wheel assembly doesn't seem to have the proper amount of clearance for the screws. Until I get the drive shaft working, I can't evaluate the control mechanisms and electronics, so I won't comment on those.
It's possible I totally messed it up somehow, but it seems at least a failure of over-estimating the intelligence of their audience, and likely some manufacturing defects. I'm dreading the kids getting up in the morning and having to explain to them their sound-tracking robot is a bust.
